Work Experience

Many students work best where they can regularly relate their studies to work and vice versa. If that is the case with you, look into sandwich courses. There are two types: 'thick sandwich' courses, where you study the first two years in university, spend the third on a work placement, and then return to university to complete your degree. On 'thin sandwich' courses your programmes of university study and work experience alternate throughout the course. In some cases the work experience can take place abroad or in the UK. It is also worth asking yourself whether you would prefer to get straight into a job and then do any necessary coursework part time. Work experience is also available on some foundation degrees and other vocational degrees.

OUR TIP:

Work experience should be an integral part of your years at university, as this is a critical way of developing the personal skills required in employment as well as finding out more about the professional world and where you ultimately wish to fit into it. It is also, obviously, a good way of paying for your studies. You can sometimes organise your timetable of classes and lectures so that you can get in some regular work experience in term time, but don't let your paid work jeopardise the amount of time you need to spend on your studies.
